Shooting Yourself in the Foot
I hear so many Flash developers gloat praise the fact that they don’t need to deal with browser quirks. Of course differences between the browsers have always been a hot button issue, and have been around for as long as I can remember (yeah, I’m pretty young) but it just struck me as funny when thinking that Microsoft is developing Silverlight to compete with Flash, and one of the reasons Flash became popular was the sandbox type development you have that avoids browser inconsistencies, which can be tracked back to the fact that Microsoft has yet to develop a browser that is not full of rendering differences compared to practically all the other browsers available.
So in the end, a technology that was adopted partially because Microsoft’s laziness with implementing standards (SVG comes to mind…) which have been around, developed, and approved (full CSS2 support? Partial CSS3 support?) by our governing bodies (regardless if you agree or not with them), is now what they are trying to compete with.
A story as old as history itself.
NB - I’m not saying that is the only reason Flash became popular, just one of the many reasons.
